Santa Visits St. Mary's Home

Saint Nick came to Norfolk a bit early to visit with children at St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children. See a WAVY-TV story about the visit with a Santa from Dominion here. Read about Santa's visit and other holiday happenings at St. Mary's here.

Our Home for the Holidays

Norfolk artist Germaine Clair built a gingerbread version of St. Mary's facade for the cover of St. Mary's holiday card. Philip Holman, an art teacher at the Visual & Performing Arts Academy at Salem High School in Virginia Beach, photographed the gingerbread house, along with some of the children at St. Mary's, for the card. You can see more of Holman's work here. To see more photos of St. Mary's children and staff having fun watching the gingerbread house come together, view the slideshow at the top of this page.

Inspiring Stories

Creating a Legacy

Every time Carl M. Albero visits St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children, he leaves with tears in his eyes, touched by the children and the dedicated staff who care for them. "How can you not care about St. Mary's?" said Albero, a member of the Home's Board of Trustees. "It's just an unbelievable story when you you go through there. They're good people helping these children who can't help themselves."

Albero, a retired Navy captain and cofounder and former president and CEO of AMSEC, has been a generous supporter of St. Mary's Home for a number of years. He plans to continue supporting the children of St. Mary's by remembering the Home in his will.

You can read more about planned giving here. For more information, email Martha Price Stewart, director of development, or call (757) 446-6797 or (800) 237-6555.

Football Great Bruce Smith

Brings Smiles to St. Mary's Home

Thirteen-year-old Brandon loves the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Washington Redskins. So when Bruce Smith, who played football for both, visited him on Nov. 5, Brandon naturally was all smiles. Smith spent about an hour chatting with Brandon and some of the other residents and staff, and signing footballs and photos. Read a Virginian-Pilot article about the visit here.
